International Academy

International students

Moving to the other side of the world is a big decision, both for players and for families. Here's everything you need to know about what life looks like as an international student-athlete at South Shields FC.

Coming to the UK

We'll help you every step of the way

We understand that for many of our student-athletes, joining the International Academy means leaving home for the first time, and possibly travelling to the other side of the world. From the moment you’re accepted onto the programme, our team is with you at every step of the process.

We provide guidance on student visa applications, help you understand what to expect on arrival, and ensure that every player is fully supported as they settle into life at South Shields FC and the University of Sunderland. You won’t be navigating this alone.

Accommodation

The Precinct:
University of Sunderland

All student-athletes on the International Academy programme live in University of Sunderland accommodation at The Precinct, Sunderland. Living together as a group is an important part of the programme. It builds team spirit, makes the transition to life in England easier, and ensures that every player has a support network around them from day one.

The Precinct places players within easy reach of the University’s campuses and provides access to all university student services and facilities.

Find out more about accommodation on the University of Sunderland website.

Student support

Support every step of the way

From the moment you arrive to the day you complete the programme, we have a range of support structures in place to make sure every student-athlete thrives, on and off the pitch.

Dedicated Welfare
& Wellbeing

A dedicated welfare and wellbeing function is central to the programme. Health, safety, inclusivity, and mental wellbeing are our top priorities. We understand the unique pressures of moving abroad to balance elite sport and university study.

Mental Skills Programme

Our structured mental skills programme covers both sports psychology and general mental health and wellbeing, equipping players with the frameworks and tools to handle the challenges life throws at them.

University Student Support

The University of Sunderland's "We Care Team" won the prestigious Social Mobility Project Award at the 2022 Inclusive Awards. Full student support services are available across all campuses.

Complete Medical & Physio support

Full medical and physiotherapy support is provided throughout the programme. On arrival, every player undergoes a screening session. Any injuries during the programme are managed by our expert medical team with a structured, individual rehabilitation plan.

Life in the North East

There's nowhere quite like it

The North East of England has so much to offer beyond the training ground. Our players discover stunning white sand beaches, the cities of Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham, and York, Hadrian’s Wall, incredible food, music venues, vibrant nightlife, and outdoor activities ranging from wild swimming to hiking in Northumberland.

The people of the North East are well known for being friendly, warm, and welcoming, and our players consistently tell us that the community they become part of here is one of the best parts of the whole experience.

straight from our players

“We didn't know what to expect when we first brought Jake along. He'd been playing in the park but had never had any real coaching. From the very first session, the coaches were brilliant with him. Patient, encouraging, and clearly knew their stuff. A year on, he's a different player. More importantly, he absolutely loves it.”
